Troubled Times

Left Out Again

Later in the year, Mary flew to Los Angeles to look for a house. She decided to relocate to the West Coast in reaction to the Detroit riots that followed Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. While she was away, Gordy pushed through the recording of a new Supremes single, “Love Child.” The song was written and recorded in a very short period of time and, though Cindy sang on the track, another singer was brought in to cover Mary's part.

Mary was not surprised by the event, but she was disappointed. As she had learned with the recording of “Forever Came Today,” Gordy was concerned about the recording schedule before everything else. Other recordings began to feature Mary and Cindy less and less, while focusing on Diana's solo sound.
