Hawthorne, California, is five miles from the nearest beach. Nevertheless, this conservative, working-class suburb south of Los Angeles is where the Beach Boys first found their musical inspiration. Among its blocks of modest stucco tract houses with postage-stamp sized lawns, Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine nurtured the one-of-a-kind sound that would take the world by storm, and make them, for better and worse, rock and roll legends.
