Voice of Her Time

Feeling The Love

As her career with Atlantic was beginning, a radio DJ in Chicago gave Aretha the title Queen of Soul. Aretha appeared at a ceremony and smiled as the audience roared their approval. She was even given a real crown to wear at the event!

By February 1968, Aretha's Detroit fans wanted to celebrate the success of their hometown girl. The mayor of Detroit announced February 16 as “Aretha Franklin Day.” The publishers of various music magazines, including Record World and Billboard, awarded her the title of Female Vocalist of the Year. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. flew in as a surprise guest to present her with a special award from the SCLC for her charitable work. It was a moment of triumph and achievement for Aretha.
